Excuses for a blogging hiatus: WOT Summary

So much for frequent updates on here.  I’ve been pretty flat-out with work, which is a good excuse and on top of that I’ve been working on a fun little side project.

For those who haven’t read it, the Wheel of Time series is an epic (in length as well as style) series of books written by the late Robert Jordan.  At over 3,000,000 words, 2000 names characte12 books and counting (plus a pre-quel, encyclopedia, video game, CCG, RPG) this isn’t a series for the faint hearted.  The books are full of hints that may pay off years later.  (eg: The third book – published in 1993 – had hints about a specific characters motivations.  Someone who is not supposed to lie was caught in what seemed to be a lie.  It took until 2009 (16 years later) to find out the truth of what that character is doing!)

To help track that complexity, I decided to re-read all of the books before the 12th volume came out in November.  That was straigh-forward enough, but then I decided to creat so much more work for myself.  I decided to summarize each chapter (in-fact – each Point Of View within a chapter).  515 chapters summarized.  18,753 words.  Countless hours of reading/typing.

I was also playing around with some Javascript/JQuery – so it has a fun little function.  Lets say you are interested in a particular character.  Click on their name in the menu and just see the scene where they had a major role.  Or just look at the highlights.

Note that anything on that site is a major spoiler if you haven’t read the series (through to KoD).
